Like many parents, I found it myself getting very nervous on my child’s first visit to primary school. I had been so used to her going to nursery for such a long time that the thought of her being at school five days a week petrified me.
As often is the case, my daughter was fine, it was me that was the problem. I was quite surprised to see that a lot of what they do in reception is play orientated and not much table work at all. The idea is that children will learn through play rather than in a typical classroom situation.
Although there is this relaxed approach at times, they must also under go certain exams (even if not in an exam environment). Each child will be assessed not long after they start school and again at the end of key stage one and key stage two to allow the school and government to track their progress.
